Hello!
My slow living room makeover continues…
I realized I never posted about a change I made last fall that made all the difference for me. So, better late than never right?
Since the day we moved into our house about 5 years ago, I’ve wanted to paint the brick wall in our living room. My husband however did not. In fact, it is the one thing in the house I am not allowed to touch.
It just screamed 70’s brick black hole to me, and so I’ve come up with ways to hide it as much as possible – paint the mantle white, add white shutters, add a brass fire screen, etc. Anything to bounce light around the living room.
Last summer we took a little weekend getaway and stayed in downtown Pittsburgh, and as we were walking around, I noticed something that all “good” brick has in common…
good brick…
good brick…
good brick…
did you see it? The grout is light. The bricks can be different colors, old, new, whitewashed, but the real difference is in the grout. So I convinced my husband to let me paint just the grout. Here’s a video of the process…

I’m not going to lie, it was tedious, but certainly not hard. I ruined two tiny brushes (a craft brush like this will work), but it took less than a pint of General Finishes Millstone Milk Paint, so it was an inexpensive project.
Look at what a difference a little paint makes! Now, if I had it my way, I would also whitewash the bricks, but we are working with compromise here, so I’ll take it!
What a difference it makes on that wall!
Pin the project to save!
Now to finish off the ceiling!!
Blessings!
