One of my most popular posts (and videos) is an old one all about giving your furniture an all over metallic look. It was time to update the post and the video, and I had just the set to do it with.

Metallic paint can be a little tricky to work with, but I have an easy solution that makes it turn out so pretty.
This bedroom set was one a friend of mine picked up for her girl’s bedroom. It had beautiful details, but had just seen better days with the antiqued speckled finish and yellow and green trim. I don’t quite know when this finish ever was in style, but I’m sure glad it’s not anymore.
After a good cleaning with denatured alcohol and water, it was time for paint! Giving these a fresh coat of Antique White paint made all the difference in the world. It took two coats to completely cover and then it was ready for a little sparkle.
I mixed General Finishes High Performance Topcoat in flat finish with Champagne Pearl Effects (in the ratio of about 1/2 and 1/2). It makes more of a glaze and allows the metallic paint to be spread more evenly over the piece. BONUS: It also seals and protects the piece while it’s giving it some pearly shine.
Unfortunately this finish, while gorgeous in person is a little hard to photograph. Here are two drawers for comparison, the bottom one is just Antique White, the top one has the Champagne Pearl Effects glaze on top.
It’s a subtle difference that really makes a gorgeous finish.
Here’s a full video tutorial showing you how easy it is to apply!
I spray painted the handles to the dressers in this really pretty champagne color. I edged them with some Pewter Rub n Buff and called them updated!
What a difference a little paint (and glitter) makes!
What will you paint metallic next?

I was thinking more in line with metallic colors like Gilded Gold or Golden Chestnut, rather dark shades. With these colors do you start with paint (in same color but lighter) , than your metallic, no too cost because it’s already shiny?
Yes, I like to start with a lighter shade of paint to increase my coverage before I add my metallics.
Hi Jenni, Love your Roots and Wings website/projects. Tried to subscribe, but seems to require my Google password. Need to ask a grandchild (LOL) for assistance with this.
My favorite video is the one on mixing General Finishes Pearl effects with the top coat to make a glaze – easier application, Did night stand for great niece’s (12 year old) bedroom – thanks so much for that great tip!
