Hey there!

While I was doing the paint review series, I was searching for the best chalk paint.  I know everyone has their opinion on paint brands, but I came across a chalk paint that I found to surprisingly like.  In fact I liked it a lot! It was Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint.  And as I’ve been working with it more, I’ve come to find it’s a great option for you chalk paint lovers.

Here’s what I used…

-220 grit sandpaper
-White Lightning
-Stormy Seas Chalk Paint
-Satin Top Coat

I made a full video tutorial for you on how to use Dixie Belle Mineral Paint and how to wet distress it before it’s cured.

Here’s how the table started.  My client found this at a flea market a few years ago, what a find! It’s a pretty library, console table that has some great details.  It’s a little scratched though, and she wanted it to be updated with a color that would go a bit better in her living room.

Before the video started I did give it a light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper.  I like to do this no matter what kind of paint I’m using, it ensures the paint will really STICK!  Even the best chalk paint needs the proper prep.

Once I was finished sanding, I used White Lightning to clean it off.  One rinse coat with water and a final wipe down, I’m ready to go.

If you want a smoother finish, dip your brush in some water first to make it damp and then dip it into the chalk paint.  This color is Stormy Seas, and it is soooo pretty! I used Dixie Belle Synthetic brushes in this video, they are fantastic brushes that really give a great finish!

I did use two coats of paint for this table, there were a few places that just didn’t cover with one coat.  Although, I will say one of the things about a good chalk paint is the amazing coverage.

Once the paint was all dry, but not more than 24 hours later, I used a Dixie Belle finishing pad dampened with water to wet distress the piece.  It will re-activate and remove the paint in places.  You can also distress with 120 grit sandpaper, but this is just a fun option, that’s a little different than usual.  It does give it a bit of a different look than the sandpaper.

I sealed the table with Satin Top Coat.  I wanted to give the table a bit of shine, and make it durable for her.  This table sits behind her couch in the living room, so a rogue cup could find it’s way here.  No need to stress, the top coat is all it needs to give it that extra protection it needs.

I also refinished this purple dresser set in Dixie Belle Chalk Paint, I didn’t even know I liked purple until after this makeover. It turned out beautiful!

Well, what do you think? Do you like chalk paint? What is the best chalk paint in your opinion??

Until next time,
Jenni
