This is the guest bathroom in our home. Our 3 kids share the bathroom, it’s a small mauve cave with no natural light and the builder grade orange oak trim and cabinets the rest of the house had. I don’t know what took me so long to get around to doing the bathroom. No one seemed to care that the walls were some funny shade of purple and the shower curtain hung as an after thought was blue. So it sat, I didn’t have a clear direction for it until recently when I decided two things. My goals for the space were to make it have some sort of character (since it currently had none), and to brighten the space up as much as possible.

I chose to do a simple DIY board and batten wall treatment. It was surprisingly easy, inexpensive and made a really big impact in this small space. Let me show you how we did it…
Supplies:
- 1×4 PVC or pine (for the baseboards)
- 1×3 PVC or pine (for the vertical and top boards)
- Nail gun – https://amzn.to/2F6O4I4
- Caulk – https://amzn.to/2F7Wgb7
- Wall Hooks
- Wall Shelf
- Rug
A few weeks prior to doing the wall treatment, I painted the bathroom vanity. Check out this full tutorial on how to do it here. Instead of chalk paint though, I used General Finishes Reverent Gray and this fantastic chrome hardware. Once the vanity was painted, I decided the board and batten should match (pure white would have been my first choice, but because the tub and toilet are off-white, I needed something that wouldn’t clash with what was already there).
So the board and batten was painted in a color match to GF Reverent Gray. The top of the walls were painted in BM Hale Navy. It’s a rich, dark navy that was the perfect contrast to the lighter wall treatment.
My bathroom art is missing… I have some prints ordered, they just aren’t ready yet 😉
It’s amazing how a little decor (even in the bathroom) will really tie a space together. I chose to use a scrap piece of barn wood and these black brackets for a shelf. It’s a little spot for some decorations and extra storage space as well.
These hooks from Hobby Lobby are fantastic. I used them in my entry closet makeover, and they hold a ton of stuff and give that rustic, farmhouse look. Every other week they are half off as well, so wait for a sale before you buy them!
With a little imagination, a little inspiration and of course, some paint – this bathroom is transformed. Now, I’m not embarrassed when a guest comes to stay!
Do you love the board and batten look? Would it be a project you’d be willing to tackle??
Until next time,
Jenni
Very nice!
Love the board and batten. You took the bathroom from “eh” to “wow”.
Thank you so much, I think so too. What a difference!
It looks fantastic! Where did you caulk? Top and bottom of the top horizontal rail and the vertical ones as well?
Nicely done! Your colors and accessories are spot on.
I’d like to know where you bought your area rug. I’ve been looking for a pattern like this for quite some time.
Thanks, Mike
The kid’s bathroom turned out great, you made it one of a kind!
I liked ,beautiful
Love the transformation! The bathroom even appears to be more spacious.
Thank you! It really feels bigger!
I am going to try this board and batten look at my daughters home
Love the bathroom.
Looks great! I hope the kids like it.
Love it all done, except using at least a semi gloss would that be easier in any wet room to clean?
Yes, semi-gloss is certainly a good option. I painted my vanity in General Finishes Milk paint and wanted the walls to blend in, both in color and sheen.
