DIY closet makeover part one the organizing plan

Well friends, Happy New Year!!  I’m kicking off 2019 with a DIY Closet Makeover.  I know many of you want to get organized this year, so I thought we’d start off January right with this DIY project. These types of projects are my favorites, taking a space that just isn’t working well and turning it into something custom, functional and beautiful! I did that last year with my entry closet makeover, it has made such a difference in how we use the space.

I didn’t do this alone, I brought in my friend Kristin DiBacco from The Serene Space to help me out.  She’s sharing some really helpful tips in these videos that I didn’t even think of!!

I know not everyone’s closet is the same. And we all use our space in a slightly different way, but I do think that seeing someone go through the process of organizing can be really helpful for you to get your creative juices flowing and apply the same principles to your own space.

When I was editing the photos for this post, I was wondering what in the world I was thinking sharing my closet with the world.  This is the real deal folks, it’s not staged at all.  We moved into the house, unpacked the boxes and made do with what we had…

You can see from this screen shot in the video, the clothes literally felt like they were trying to eat us.

Here were a few of my main goals when starting this project:

-Get rid of that awful wire shelf on the left, it’s just holding junk!

-Make my husband clean out his side of the closet

-Make this a space that is better organized, and use the space we have wisely

Kristin asked me what I liked about my closet when we started this project, and I couldn’t think of anything.  I didn’t know people even liked there closets, is that a thing??  The one thing that I do enjoy is my upcycled window jewelry holder.  It’s got some character, some charm and does a good job of displaying my jewelry.

Side note on the pig:  It’s been quite a topic of discussion.  The pig was my childhood piggy bank.  I have no idea really why it’s in our closet, again, you pack the boxes when you move, you unpack them and there the stuff stays.  Sometimes with no rhyme or reason as to why it’s even there.  Kristin made me move the pig to the basement where the rest of my childhood relics live.

There was a lot of vertical space that wasn’t being well used.  I knew this wasn’t a huge closet, but it definitely wasn’t tiny either.  We just had to make it more functional for our needs. We fold our pants and hang the majority of our shirts, so making space for each storage method was an important consideration of the makeover plan.

I love projects like this, when form and function come together in a beautiful way.  Trust me, the outcome is good!

Here’s the video, this is all about our plan and Kristin is really walking us through what a consultation with a Professional Organizer looks like.  Trust me, if this is something you’ve been thinking about investing in this year, it’s well worth it!

Next week we tackle the purge.  Cleaning out is oddly so much fun to me!  Stay tuned!

Until next time,
